This was hilarious and very insightful. I’m a 20 year old college student from Mississippi and I also have bipolar disorder. I’ve dealt with slight psychosis, but never anything quite as intense as your story. I’ve had very similar delusions and obsessions pertaining to Jesus and moral issues that started when I was 16. Luckily, I’ve never been hospitalized. Bipolar disorder and substance abuse run in my family. After starting college, I began diving into research in psychology and neuroscience. Learning has helped me cope with some of the symptoms, along with other things, but I still deal with certain stuff. I currently study Neuroscience in Jackson, Mississippi, while shadowing a psychiatrist at Whitfield Mental Hospital two days a week. Mental health treatment is very poor in our state due to state budget cuts (due to our conservative politicians), practically zero mental health education in schools, and the cultural stigma surounding mental illness. Backwoods Mississippi is very Christian and most of the people I’ve grown up around don’t even know what mental illness is. Anyways, I enjoyed the podcast!

Thanks for listening, Zack. Great to know it resonated with you all the way in Mississippi. Our conservative politicians aren’t doing much for Mental health over here, either – sounds like your doing your part, though. Keep up the learning, there’s plenty to do out there!

      Cheers
